To get the most from your professional removalists, there are a few things you can do to make the packing and unpacking more efficient and your move less stressful.

One Month To Moving Day:

Give yourself a month or more before moving day for these tasks:

Book your Forster Tuncurry Removalist team and let them know of any special requirements in advance of moving day.

Organise contents and household insurance for your new home.

Notify the electoral office of your new address ad well as Services NSW for change of driver’s licence details and car registration. Contact your energy and internet providers or have yur real estate agent organise these transfers for you.

Complete a floor plan of your new home for furniture placement and measure the spaces to ensure your furniture will fit, particularly the fridge. Make sure your large items will fit through the doors and if in doubt, talk to the team at Forster Tuncurry Removals for advice before moving day.

Prepare an inventory of everything you own, noting any scratches or dents.

Make a note of any precious items that require special care to move.

Dispose of everything that you don’t need. Call your local council to check on street verge pickups, charity shops for unwanted furniture and clothing and your local waste management site for any information about disposing of items, such as car batteries, old paint and electrical goods.

Gas cylinders and air bottles should be empty with valves open, dispose of all flammable liquids such as garden chemicals, paint, paint thinners, cleaning fluids, bleach, fuel and aerosols

Use up all that frozen food and anything in the cupboards that you don’t want to take with you.

Having a folder for all your moving documents is a good idea – it’s easy to lose rack of details when moving day arrives.

Arrange to have your mail redirected to your new address and cancel or redirect subscriptions.

Organise key collection time and settlement date with lawyers or your real estate agents as this will determine your moving day.

If leasing, arrange a property inspection and book cleaners.

Packing and Unpacking: Before Moving Day

Organise your carton and packing materials. Forster Tuncurry Removals has an ample supply of everything you’ll need to pack before moving day.

Label every carton clearly, on the tape, as to contents and its room destination and prepare an inventory list of each carton.

Use ziplock bags for securing little things like screws, nuts and other easily lost items.

Pack lighter items in large cartons, heavier items in small cartons, heavier items on bottom.

Dismantle furniture that comes apart – remember to tape screws in an obvious location or label and place in an essentials carton with TV, sound system remote controls, bed legs, shelf supports, keys to furniture cabinets and manufacturers instructions for reassembly of items.

A great idea is a ‘survival kit’ with everything you’ll need to keep you and your family comfortable on moving day – a kettle, tea and coffee, breakfast foods, special children’s toys, school needs, pet leads and bowls, bathroom necessities, mobile phones, medications, snacks, corkscrew, spare light globes, scissors, tools, toilet paper.

Small valuables and personal items can go with you in the car.

Arrange access and parking for the removalist’s truck.

Moving Day:

Defrost and empty out your refrigerator and use a portable esky to keep what you need on the day fresh . Clean the oven and have a vacuum on hand for last minute cleaning.

Unplug and tie up appliance cords.

Keep cash on hand for last minute expenses and make sure you have organised payment for the removalists.

Load kitchen boxes last so they are first off the truck.

Lock all doors and windows, turn off hot water system if required and do a last minute check of all the tops of cupboards, garden area, sheds and garage.

Return all keys to the Real Estate Agent or new tenant. Lock house, turn off power, tighten all taps, check gas and electrical and make sure you have left the remote and any other items required for the new tenants.

Finally, say goodbye to the neighbours!

Unpacking:

Give clear directions to your removalist team about where you want items placed and stacked.

Check your inventory and before the removal team leaves, make sure everything has been unloaded and you are happy with the job.

Assemble beds and make up as soon as possible.

Settle children and pets with familiar items for reassurance.

Keep cats inside for a few days.

Check that you have all keys and relevant instructions to your new residence.

Contact your new local council for garbage collection information and then say g’day to your new neighbours!
